Floyd Patterson was the first Olympic Gold
Medallist to win the World Heavyweight Championship; and
he was the youngest boxer (21 years 11 months) to win that
title and also the first Heavyweight Champion to regain
the title.
An intelligent boxer, Patterson was not ideally
built for a heavyweight. He stood barely 6 feet tall and
weighed only 190 pounds with a short reach of 71 inches
and a small 12 and three quarter inch fist. His short reach
made it imperative for him to leap at opponents, sometimes
with both feet off the floor in order to land his punches.
It was a style that exposed him to counter blows, and in
seven of his title fights he was put down 16 times. In his
first 36 contests after turning pro he was beaten only once.
In 1956 he fought Archie Moore for the title left vacant
by the retirement of Rocky Marciano and won by a knockout
in round 5. He defended the title against several challengers
but in 1959 was stopped by Ingemar Johansson in 3 rounds
after being floored seven times by the Swede powerful right
hand. He made history by regaining the title from Johansson
by knockout in 5 rounds. Patterson eventually lost the title
to the tough Sonny Liston by knockout in the first round.
He fought a rematch with Liston with the same result. He
continued boxing for another five years and even made another
bid to regain his title by challenging Muhammad Ali only
to lose by stoppage in round 12
