Muhammad Ali vs Jimmy Young
Venue: Capital Center, Landover, Maryland. 30th April, 1976.
The fight with jimmy young was
precisely the kind of bout Ali should have avoided, but as
George Plimpton observed, “he loved to fight.”
Even so, Ali’s desire to entertain was becoming taxed.
He went to the ring against jimmy young short of conditioning
and at his heaviest weight ever of 230lbs. Always prone to
gaining weight, in part due to his inability to refuse bowls
of ice cream, his favourite dessert, Ali would usually slough
the weight off in the gym. For a fight like Young, though,
he didn’t bother. Ali’s relative lack of fitness
was matched only by young’s absence of ambition.
Ringsiders were agreed that Ali produced the worst performance
of his career in outpointing an opponent whose sole aim was
to survive. Several times during the fight, young put his
head through the ropes as Ali advanced on him, forcing the
referee to halt the action.
The final bell, when it came, was a merciful release for
all involved.
