Muhammad Ali vs Don Warner
Venue: Miami Beach Auditorium, Florida. 28th February, 1962.
Angelo Dundee got Cassius clay
out of New York as soon as he could and refused to allow him
to go back, despite several offers from the promoters at Madison
square garden. He had been alarmed by the banks knowdown and
figured that new your had emboldened the over-confident youngster
to an unacceptable degree. Instead, he hustled clay back to
Florida and the fifth street gym. His next fight would be
against don Warner. A two-handed puncher who had a good record
of wins inside the distance. “He was a tough left-hooker
from Philadelphia,” Angelo Dundee recalled.

Yet clay quickly showed how much he had learned. Having made
his now-required prediction – this time that Warner
would be disposed of in five – clay began well. Every
time earner tried to get his big left away, clay jabbed and
feinted, leaving Warner off-balance and unable to land a good
punch. The knockout came a round ahead of the prediction;
the bloodied Warner was knocked through the ropes during round
four.
When a reporter challenged clay about his failure to predict
the correct round, clay responded that, as Warner had refused
to shake hands with him at the weigh-in, he had been docked
one round for poor sportsmanship. His with was becoming as
quick as his fists.
