Venue: Convention Center, Las Vegas, 27th June, 1972.
Muhammad Ali looked more imposing
of the two fighters from the off and set about convincing
Quarry that he had no chance. Ali used the same psychological
tactics used in the first fight with George Chuvalo: "Your
punches don't hurt me and I have no respect for you."
Muhammad Ali made the point as
the rounds went by by, first smothering Quarry's attacks by
tying him up and then unleashing some swift combinations.
By the fifth round Ali had seen
off any threat and was entertaining the crowd with some shouted
asides, informing the ringside press, " this is an easy
way to make a living." In round six, Ali decided to try
and close the show with hurtful combinations, but the ever
game Quarry remained on his feet. The fight was stopped twenty
seconds into round seven as Ali, seeing his opponent had little
left, waved the referee in to halt the contest.
