continued with a trip to Japan to fight MacFoster. Ali charmed
his hosts, who were just glad to have the great man among
them and willing to compete, the pay-day would prove useful
to Ali, who had been stuck a court order to give his wife
Sonji $44,000 in alimony payments.
Foster, like Jimmy Ellis was a former sparring partner of
Ali’s and the pair fought out one of the east auspicious
bouts of Ali’s career. Ali won an easy points victory
in a scrap devoid of excitement, but 1972 was to prove a difficult
year for Ali as he encountered perhaps the first lull of his
professional career.
