Muhammad Ali vs Richard Dunn

Venue: Olympiahalle, Munich, Gemrany. 24th May, 1976.

British Heavyweight Boxer Richard Dunn could probably have comfortably handled Jean-Pierre Coopman, but was not a fighter of the quality of Henry Cooper or Joe Bugner. Again Ali’s special appeal in Europe rescued the promotion but it was becoming clear that the champion was a winter king, a fighter whose sublime skills would soon be claimed by the passing years.

Dunn, tall and blond, had trained hard and gave Ali his best; there was no shame in his performance. He just wasn’t good enough. Ali knocked him down five times in five rounds.

Muhammad Ali promised the gloves hed used in the fight to British promoter Mickey Duff, who was raising funds for Chris Finnigan, a terrific fighter who had lost sight in one eye. When he passed his gloves to duff in the ring, Ali told duff to look inside. In one it was written ‘Ali wins’ and in the other ‘round five’.
