Muhammad Ali Biography >
Muhammad Ali vs George Chuvalo 2
Venue: Pacific Coliseum, Vancouver, Canada, 1st May, 1972.
Muhammad Ali had already beaten
George Chuvalo on a decision in an utterly one-sided bout
in 1966. The Canadian’s greatest quality remained his
ability to take sustained punishment without folding. However,
his granite chin had finally met its match in the heavyweight
division’s fearsome newcomer – the glowering giant
George Foreman. Just three rounds at the mercy of the fists
of Foreman had, it was said, left Chuvalo’s wife screaming
at the referee to save her husband from foreman’s assault.

Ali didn’t possess such power. He was still a head-hunter,
rarely dipping to throw to the body and his punches relied
on the zinging, cumulative effect – he was no one –
shot KO man. Also in question was Ali’s desire to inflict
true harm. A religious man, he was loath to burden his conscience
with a bad injury to an opponent especially those who obviously
posed no threat to him. Foreman and Joe Frazier were untroubled
by such concerns.
Chuvalo survived as Ali hit him almost at will. The fight
looked set for the distance from the start; the decision,
though, was never in doubt
