It was 1961.

It was the 5th Street Gym, Miami Beach.

Climbing a stairway to the 5th Street Gym in 1967, you stepped over a rheumy drunk called “Sweet Red,” who was, as far as anyone knew, never sweet to a living soul. You searched a way up a dark passage so narrow its walls left dirt on your sleeves. A left at the landing and you stood four steps from a boxing ring. The greatest athlete you would ever see jumped rope on the far side of the place, his back to you, working in slivers of sunlight that came around red curlicue lettering on the outside of the gym windows, “5th St. Gym.”

There Angelo Dundee worked with 15 world champions, one the boy Cassius Clay, soon to be the man Muhammad Ali, the most famous person on Earth.

“On Earth, and everywhere else,” Dundee said. “Muhammad was from another planet.”
