Larry Holmes's comeback fight -- an easy one-round knockout
over Tim (Doc) Anderson tonight -- was overshadowed by a
bizarre brawl afterward between Holmes and another former
heavyweight champion, Trevor Berbick, before a shocked crowd
in front of the Diplomat Hotel here.
The street fight, which spilled onto South Ocean Drive,
a main thoroughfare also known as A1A, had its origins in
remarks made by both men at the post-fight news conference.
At that news conference, Holmes was asked whether he would
fight Berbick in a future bout during his present comeback
campaign. With Berbick in the audience, Holmes said he would
not consider Berbick as an opponent and then added: "I
do not like him or respect him."
When Holmes left the news conference, an angry Berbick
accused Holmes of using a woman friend of his to sabotage
the Berbicks' marriage. "All the problems I have are
through him," Berbick said.
Hank Kaplan, a boxing historian and friend of Berbick's,
said Berbick has been separated from his wife, Nadine, since
last year.
Todd Neidorf, a publicist for the Holmes-Anderson bout,
said that on the ride down, a grim-faced Holmes told his
aide, Dick Lovell, that he had to confront Berbick.
Holmes spotted Berbick in front of the hotel and chased
him down the driveway.
"He kicked and punched him, and Berbick ran out into
the street," said Victor Stephenson, a parking employee
of the hotel. "Larry Holmes kept kicking and punching
him." Other witnesses said associates of Holmes had
also struck Berkbick.
Police separated the fighters.
Holmes then raced across the tops of two parked cars and
leaped on Berbick, knocking him to the ground. Holmes, who
was wearing a jogging suit, punched and wrestled Berbick
until police again separated the men.
Hollywood Police Sergeant F. D. Lloyd said no arrests had
been made. "Larry Holmes is back in the hotel, and
Berbick is back on his way home," Lloyd said. Berbick
lives in Miramar, Fla.
In April 1981, Holmes won a 15-round decision over Berbick.
